Passage: John 18:1-4; Read John 19:17.

Jesus went forth;
John 18:1 When Jesus had spoken these words, he went forth with his disciples over the brook Cedron, where was a garden, into the which he entered, and his disciples. 2 And Judas also, which betrayed him, knew the place: for Jesus ofttimes resorted thither with his disciples. 3 Judas then, having received a band of men and officers from the chief priests and Pharisees, cometh thither with lanterns and torches and weapons. 4 Jesus therefore, knowing all things that should come upon him, went forth, and said unto them, Whom seek ye?

John 19:17 And he bearing his cross went forth into a place called the place of a skull, which is called in the Hebrew Golgotha:

1. He went forth to do His Fathers will.
Saying, Father if Thou be willing, remove this cup from me: nevertheless not my will but thine be done. Luke 22:42

This was the ruling passion of His life; at one time He declared that it was His meat and drink to do the will that sent Him, and to finish His work. All other things were of no interest to Him.

2. He went forth. He went forth knowing all things that were to happen to Him.
What love and what courage ! He had foretold that He was to suffer many things of the chief priests and elders, and be crucified, and rise again on the third day.

If it were possible for you and I to know just the things we were to have to pass through in advance we would never live to pass through many of the trials which we all pass through. But Jesus knew all the things that were to happen to Him, and still He went forth.
On one occasion it was necessary for Him to go into the garden and wait upon the Lord for strength, and the angel of the Lord waited upon Him, and His strength was renewed.
If we wait upon the Lord we too shall have our strength renewed, and the Holy Spirit will enable us to go forth to do all things in the name of Him who sent us.
Have you drawn back through fear ?  " As thy days so shall thy strength be."

3. He went forth for others.
He went forth for us; Men are considered heroes when they go forth against inhuman foes to fight and do their duty, but he went forth to die, no escape desired.
He new none other could redeem us from the curse of sin.
If things were as they were supposed to be we would have went forth ourselves to die, but He went as our substitute.

4. He went forth alone. The agony of being alone. This is not required of you and I.  "Lo I am with you always, even to the end." are the words of the master to you and I.

5. He went forth and conquered, thus making it possible for us to do likewise.

We may be over comers, because He has overcome.

Let us go forward, Spiritually.
Let us go forward, Service rendered.
Let us go forward, Winning souls.
